Global textile designer marks half a century in business

Global designer and manufacturer of environmental textiles, Camira is celebrating 50 years since the business was founded under the name Camborne Fabrics.

Established in 1974 in Huddersfield, the northern textile heartland of the UK, Camira now operates worldwide, producing more than eight million metres of fabric per year, with an annual turnover of more than £85 million.

Commenting on Camira’s 50th anniversary, Camira’s CEO Alan Williams said: “Celebrating 50 years is a fantastic achievement – our success has been built on producing high quality, environmentally innovative fabrics, whilst providing excellent customer service and global logistics.

“Our business is unique in the fact that we control every part of the process, from yarn spinning, to weaving, knitting, dyeing, and finishing, which sets us apart from other textile companies and has laid our foundations for growth.”

Headquartered in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, in the UK Camira employs 650 people and products are sold in 75 countries, with manufacturing facilities at six sites in the UK and one in Lithuania, as well as offices in Europe, North America, Australia and China.

Alan Williams continued: “We’ll be celebrating this special moment in history through key collaborations, events and new product launches which all tie into a celebration of sustainability, people, pattern and colour.”

The news follows the recent relaunch of Camira’s 100% pure new wool felt fabric, Blazer produced using New Zealand lambswool for the hospitality sector. Now available in 77 colourways, Blazer has the largest colour offering of any of Camira’s textiles.

Over the last 50 years, Camira has expanded its vertical manufacturing capability; in addition to weaving on more than 100 looms, the company also has wool and polyester yarn spinning, yarn dyers and fabric piece dyers, technical knitting and specialist upholstery services.
